John Neville-Andrews
Artistic Producer
JOHN NEVILLE-ANDREWS has over 35 years' experience in the theatre as a director/actor/author/producer. He came to this country as actor/director/co-author of the enigmatic comedies EL GRANDE DE COCA-COLA (1974 Drama Desk Award, Best Musical, filmed for HBO concert presentation) and BULLSHOT CRUMMOND (made into a movie by George Harrison's Handmade Films Company). Since then he has directed across the country, garnering recognition for his innovative productions, including: NOISES OFF (3 productions), PRIVATE LIVES, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE, INHERIT THE WIND, HOW I LEARNED TO DRIVE and THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES.
His direction of musicals includes HAIR, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, STOP THE WORLD I WANT TO GET OFF, SUGAR BABIES, THE FANTASTICS, the American Premieres of WIND IN THE WILLOWS and MINA AND COLOSSUS, as well as national tours of CRAZY FOR YOU in America and Germany. Based on those productions he was authorized by the Gershwin Estate to adapt a 90-minute version of CRAZY FOR YOU for the Sands Casino in Atlantic City. Mr. Neville-Andrews was invited to direct the prestigious Meadows Award For Excellence tribute to Stephen Sondheim, which was aired on the A&E cable channel and included performances by Mr. Sondheim, Bernadette Peters, Debra Monk and Chip Zien.
As Artistic Producer of the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington D.C. he directed critically acclaimed productions of THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, KING LEAR, THE CHERRY ORCHARD, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL and OTHELLO, and won a Helen Hayes Award for "Outstanding Resident Production" of THE MISER. For the 2000 Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival, he has directed THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, CYRANO DE BERGERAC and MISALLIANCE.
As Artistic Producer of the innovative Festival of New Works in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a showcase for the development of new plays, screenplays and musicals, he has produced and/or directed the plays ORCHIDELIRIUM, THE LOVE LIST, END OF THE UNIVERSE and PIG FARM by Greg Kotis (URINETOWN); the screenplays SAGE, DEAD AND KICKING and HUNGRY by Craig Silverstein (INVISIBLE MAN); and the musicals LOVESONGS, BROADSTROKES and WILD WOMEN OF PLANET WONGO, book by Steve Mackes (BOOBS).
He is currently the Artistic Producer of the Michigan Shakespeare Festival, where his productions of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, OTHELLO, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, AS YOU LIKE IT, MACBETH, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE and HAMLET have received high praise from critics and audiences.
In 1983 Mr. Neville-Andrews was the recipient of the American Theatre Association Award for "Outstanding Achievement in the Theatre as a Director, Actor and Author."
